Fresno State appeared to have control of the game on several occasions, including with 2 minutes 12 seconds left when it had a 51-47 lead. But the Miners tied it at 51-51 with 1:32 remaining. The game was tied 53-53 with just under a minute to go when Amy Pack hit a shot in the paint with 24 seconds left to give UTEP a 55-53 lead. But Lindsay Logan forced overtime when she hit a leaning 10-foot jumper with 1.8 seconds left.
In the overtime, UTEP scored the first two baskets to take a 59-55 lead. Fresno State narrowed the deficit to one when Omelogo Udeze hit a free throw, then missed the second, which Amanda Baker picked up and put back in, making the score 59-58. But April Garza, who hurt the Bulldogs all night, hit a 16-footer to make it 61-58. FS cut it back to one on a short jumper by Tiffany Simon, but once against UTEP had an answer. This time it was Kiarra Drummond, who had missed the last three games with an ankle injury, who hit a shot in the paint to increase the advantage to 63-60. The Miners put the game away when Amy Pack hit two free throws with 30 seconds left to give UTEP a 65-60 lead.
The offensive star of the night for Fresno State was Laura Garcia. She had 25 points, which ties the highest offensive output of any Bulldog this year. Garcia also tied her career-high with seven rebounds. She also added four assists. Tiffany Lewis scored 11 points and added nine rebounds. Lindsay Logan had 10.
For the Miners, it was the Pack and Garza show all evening. Pack scored 30 points, the most any player has scored against FS this year, including four in overtime. Garza was also unstoppable, scoring 19 to go along with her game-high 13 rebounds.
Neither team shot very well in the game. UTEP shot 42 percent, but make 4 of 6 shot in the overtime. Fresno State struggled mightily, however, making only 33 percent of its shots, including a 2 of 7 effort in the extra stanza.
The Bulldogs return home to prepare for their conference home opener against TCU on Thu. at 7 p.m. at the North Gym. The game will be televised live by MediaOne and broadcast on a tape delay basis by KFIG (AM 1430).
