BULLDOGS TRAVEL TO PLAY RICE AND TULSA
After splitting last weekend?s games, Fresno State heads back on the road this week to take on Rice Thu. at 5 p.m. PST and Tulsa Sat. at 12:05 p.m. PST. The Bulldogs are in search of their first road win of the year. LOGAN?S BIG NIGHT
Thursday night?s victory over TCU will be one Lindsay Logan remembers for a long time. She poured in a Fresno State freshman record 33 points on 12 of 17 shooting, one of which was a 60-footer at the end of the first half. It was the most points a Bulldog has scored since Feb. 25, 1995, when Tanisha Huddleston scored 33 against BYU. No Fresno State player has scored more than 33 since Yannick Souvre piled up a school-record 36 against Baylor on Dec. 1, 1989. BACK TO SEVEN FOR A NIGHT
Most coaches shudder at the thought of having only seven players to deal with during a game. But for Bulldogs? coach Britt King, it?s old hat. Laura Garcia sprained her ankle in practice on Jan. 16 and had to sit out the TCU contest. But FS was up to the task, grabbing its first WAC victory despite not having the duties of Garcia, the team?s third-leading scorer at the time. The Bulldogs are 6-3 this season when they have only seven healthy players. AND THEN THERE WERE TWO
With Tiffany Lewis coming off the bench against UTEP and Laura Garcia missing the TCU game with a sprained ankle, Lindsay Logan and Amanda Baker remain as the only players to have started every game. FINALLY...THE STREAK IS OVER
Thursday?s game was a momentous occasion: For the first time this season, the Bulldogs won a game when the opponent scored more than 65 points. Unfortunately, the same didn?t happen against SMU, which scored 86 points against Fresno State, the most it has given up this year, and won. On the season, FS is 7-0 when holding an opponent to 65 points or less and 1-9 when it does not. MORE ON THE 33
Lindsay Logan?s 33-point performance was the most by any player from the Western Athletic Conference this season. UTEP?s Heidi Walker had the previous high of 32, which came against Prairie View A&M. SHE?S TIRELESS
For the second consecutive week, Lindsay Logan played the entire game in both Bulldogs? contests. She leads the team in minutes, averaging 37.5 per game. Logan has not left a game since Jan. 8 against Saint Mary?s and has a streak of 150 consecutive minutes played. LOOKING FOR NUMBER ONE IN THE LONE STAR STATE
Fresno State will be looking to make history when it plays Rice on Thursday. The Bulldogs have never won a game in Texas, losing 11 consecutive contests, including to UTEP 66-61 in overtime on Jan. 15. FS is 0-6 at UTEP, 0-2 at Rice, 0-1 at TCU, 0-1 at Texas Tech and 0-1 at SMU. The Bulldogs will have one more Texas trip after this week, taking on TCU and SMU Feb. 17 and 19. FRESNO STATE LAST WEEK
The Bulldogs split their two games last week, defeating TCU 83-75 before falling to SMU 86-50. Against the Horned Frogs, Fresno State?s three-game losing streak came to an end with the help of Lindsay Logan, who scored a freshman-record 33 points and added six assists and four rebounds. Omelogo Udeze tied her career high with 15 points and added 10 rebounds for her second double-double of the year. Tiffany Lewis also added a double-double, her eighth of the year, with a 10-point, 10-rebound performance. FS shot 53 percent in the victory. Unfortunately, as good as things were against TCU, they went the exact opposite direction against SMU, considered by most experts to be one of the best teams in the WAC. The Mustangs took control of the contest early and never let up. A 30-4 run in the second half gave the Mustangs more than enough breathing room. Fresno State?s shot a season-low .327 (17 of 52) in the game. SCOUTING RICE
The Owls come into Thursday?s game with a 9-6 (1-2 WAC) record, including losses in three of their last four games. They were picked to finish third in the WAC preseason coaches? poll after posting back-to-back 20+ win seasons and a quarterfinal appearance in the WNIT last year. Rice is led by senior guard Marla Brumfield, who leads the Owls with a 13.9 per game scoring average and is third in the WAC with a 4.47 per game assist average. Kirra Jordan is also a valuable contributor. The senior forward is tops on the team in rebounds with 7.5 per game and second in scoring at 13.1 per game. Rice will have the edge in experience against Fresno State ? it starts three seniors and one junior. It also has had success at home, holding a 5-1 record at Autry Court. The Owls are coached by Cristy McKinney. She is in her seventh year at the helm, having posted a 128-113 career record and a 101-85 record at Tulsa. ALL-TIME VS. RICE
Rice holds a 4-2 advantage in the all-time series. The two teams last met March 1, 1999, in the first round of the WAC Championships, a game won by the Owls 78-48. Rice has also won the last three meetings between the two schools. RICE LAST WEEKEND
The Owls split their two games last week, losing at Hawai?i 71-66 before defeating San Jose State 86-62. Against the Rainbow Wahine, Kirra Jordan scored a season-high 20 points while Marla Brumfield chipped in 12, but it wasn?t enough as Hawai?i hit 14 of its last 18 free throws to walk away with a victory. Rice committed only eight turnovers in the loss. Against the Spartans, the Owls took control from the beginning, going on a 24-0 run over a 10-minute stretch in the first half en route to their highest offensive output of the season. Brumfield led the team with 21 points. SCOUTING TULSA
Picked to finish seventh in the preseason coaches? poll, Tulsa has been the surprise team of the WAC this season. The Golden Hurricane went only 4-8 in non-conference play but won their first three conference games and are currently 7-9 (3-1 WAC). TU is led by Lila Osceola, the WAC?s sixth-leading scorer. She enters the week averaging 15.1 points per game and has been the leading scorer in nine of the Golden Hurricane?s 16 games, including performances of 21, 23 and 24 points in the last three contests. Carla Morrow tops Tulsa?s rebounding list, averaging 6.8 per game, including a 9.0 average in TU?s four WAC games. Tulsa is led by first-year coach Kathy McConnell-Miller. ALL-TIME VS. TULSA
Tulsa and Fresno State have only met twice in history, with each team posting one victory. Both of the previous meetings came in the 1997-98 season. FS lost to the Golden Hurricane at Tulsa 51-38 but came back to defeat TU 82-54 at the North Gym. TULSA LAST WEEK
Tulsa split last weekend, defeating San Jose State 71-55 before getting nipped by Hawai?i 68-63. The Golden Hurricane went on a 33-9 run in the first half in its victory over SJSU. Lila Osceola led both teams with 23 points. TU wasn?t as fortunate against the Rainbow Wahine, getting outscored 9-4 in the final five minutes in a narrow loss. Kasie Pittman and Osceola combined to score 47 of the Golden Hurricane?s 63 points in the contest. SHE BEATS YOU IN SO MANY WAYS
Tiffany Lewis has gained a reputation as a scorer and a rebounder, but she has shown an ability to do it all this year. She is first on the team and third in the WAC with 3.06 steals per game. And when she gets the ball in the post, she isn?t afraid to pass it to an open teammate: Lewis comes into this week averaging nearly three assists per game. LEWIS ON THE GLASS
Lewis had another standout week on her way to rewriting the Bulldogs? record book. She stayed in third place on the career rebounding average list after pulling down 10 boards against TCU and nine against SMU. She has her eyes set on catching Careana Clay (1981-84) and moving into sixth place on the all-time career rebounds list. Lewis is currently only 90 behind her. The senior is also posing a threat to the Fresno State single-season rebound mark of 287, held by Janee Young. Lewis, who has 177 so far this year, will have to average 9.17 boards per game the rest of the season to break that mark. She is currently pulling down a WAC-best 10.4 per game. Following is where Lewis stands on Fresno State?s rebounding record lists:

GIMME THAT
Tiffany Lewis is even poised to etch her name into an area of the Fresno State record books not related to rebounding. She currently has 52 steals on the season and is nine away from tying Kari Jorgensen (1992-95) for 10th place in the single-season steals list. Should her average of 3.06 steals per game continue, Lewis would end up with 89, the second-highest single-season total in Fresno State history. LENDING ASSISTANCE
Also closing in on a single-season record list is Lindsay Logan, who is only 21 assists shy of breaking into the top 10. The freshman stands a very good chance at breaking the single-season record, set in 1987 by Wendy Martell, who dished out 169 that season. Logan, who has 112 assists this year, needs only to average 4.75 per game the rest of the year set a new single-season record. She currently leads the WAC with a 6.59 per game average. Should Logan break into the top 10, she would be the only freshman to do so in program history. DOING TIME
Lindsay Logan will take a streak of 150 consecutive minutes played into Thursday?s game at Rice. She leads the Western Athletic Conference by playing an average of 37.5 minutes per game. No other player in the conference is over 37 minutes per game. IF YOU?RE OPEN, YOU?LL BE FOUND
The Tulsa-Fresno State matchup will feature two of the top guards in the WAC, FS?s Lindsay Logan and TU?s Tammy Goyne. Both have been one-two in the conference assist race since the season began. Coming into this week, Logan led the WAC with a 6.59 average while Goyne rested in second with a 4.69 average. BAKER IS COOKING
Amanda Baker led the team in scoring against SMU with 16 points, the sixth time this year she has done so. After averaging 8.5 points as a freshman and 7.8 as a sophomore, the forward has busted out this season and currently leads the squad with a 12.1 per game average. She is also tops on the team in field goal percentage (.486) and three-point field goal percentage (.404), a mark which ranks her third in the WAC. HEY, DON?T FORGET ABOUT ME
With the rebounding attention having gone primarily to Tiffany Lewis and her WAC-leading 10.4 per game average, Omelogo Udeze is carving a solid season for herself in Lewis?s shadow. Last year?s Los Angeles Times High School Player of the Year is averaging 7.2 rebounds per game, good for second on the team and eighth in the WAC. She has also twice posted double-doubles, including a 15-point, 10-rebound performance against TCU last week. THE FRESHMEN
With the injuries to projected starters Laura Paukert and Janie McCombs, Fresno State?s quintet of freshmen knew they would get playing time immediately. Fortunately for the Bulldogs, they have thrived. The five freshmen ? guards Lindsay Logan and Laura Garcia and forwards Channan High, Tiffany Simon and Omelogo Udeze ? have contributed 57 percent of the FS offense this season. They have also notched two of the three highest offensive outputs of the year. Lindsay Logan set a school freshman-record by scoring 33 points against TCU while, in the game prior, Laura Garcia scored 25. HIGH MARKS FOR THE BULLDOGS
Fresno State tied a season-high for points in the 83-75 victory over TCU. The Bulldogs also scored 83 against Boston University on Nov. 27. FS racked up 47 points in the second half against the Horned Frogs, the most points they have scored in a half this season. GETTING DEFENSIVE
The Bulldogs will have their hands full offensively against Rice, which possesses the conference?s leading scoring defense, allowing only 59.2 points per game. However, Fresno State enters the game as the WAC?s leading team in field goal percentage at .447. THE WAC CHAMPIONSHIPS ARE COMING
For the first time ever, Fresno State is hosting the Western Athletic Conference men?s and women?s basketball tournament March 8-11. Eight men?s and eight women?s teams will invade Selland Arena to determine the best in the conference. Ticket information may be obtained by calling the Fresno State Athletics Ticket Office at (559) 278-DOGS.
