Women's Basketball Bows to Rice 67-58

HOUSTON - Fresno State shot only 37 percent in the second half and dropped a 67-58 decision to Rice at Autry Court. The loss drops FS to 8-10 (1-3 WAC) while Rice improves to 10-6 (2-2).
Both teams shot well in a tightly contested first half. The Bulldogs led 35-34 at the break shooting 64 percent. Rice was also effective from the floor, hitting on 52 percent from the floor. Tiffany Lewis led FS with 10 at halftime on 5 of 9 shooting.
The second half began as a mirror image of the first, with neither team capable of taking a large lead. With 11 minutes remaining in the game, the Owls jumped ahead by eight, 52-44. The Bulldogs were able to get it no closer than five until the 2:08 mark, when Porsha Boyd hit a three-pointer, narrowing the advantage to 56-52. The two teams traded off buckets to make it 58-54, at which point Rice put the nail in the coffin of Fresno State. Jenny Cafferty, who had already hit six three-pointers on the night, nailed a 21-footer with 1:39 left, making the score 61-54. FS was able to get no closer than seven the rest of the way.
The Bulldogs were led by Tiffany Lewis. The senior forward turned in one of her better offensive nights of the season, scoring 19 points, grabbing five boards, dishing off four assists and making three steals. Lindsay Logan added 12 while Tiffany Simon had 10.
Cafferty led Rice with 21 points, all coming on three-pointers. The seven treys was a school record for three-pointers in a game. Kirra Jordan added 14.
Fresno State returns to action Sat. at 12:05 p.m. PST when it travels to Tulsa to take on the Golden Hurricane.
