FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State men's tennis team is currently in the midst of competing in one of the most important tournaments in the fall season, the ITA Regional Championships in Berkeley.
The first day of the tournament was almost completely rained out Saturday, and some matches Sunday were moved indoors. The tournament includes top players from California, Washington, St. Mary's, Pacific, Stanford, Santa Clara, Oregon, Gonzaga, Nevada, Sacramento State and San Francisco.
Four Bulldog netters are competing in the singles draw. Senior David Mullins is the tourney's No. 9 seed and earned a bye in the first round. He then proceeded to defeat Gernot Kerschbammer of Pacific and Michael Duong of Santa Clara in the following rounds. He is scheduled to battle No. 2 seed J.P. Futtero of California in the round of 16 Monday.
Junior Nick Fustar has been a pleasant surprise so far in the tournament. He defeated San Francisco's Ryan Eakes 8-2 and then upset No. 4 seed David Martin of Stanford 6-1, 6-2. Fustar will go up against Marius Lunde of Washington on Monday afternoon.
Freshman Alex Krohn won his first round match against Mike Munson of San Francisco 6-1, 2-6, 6-2 before falling to California freshman Balazs Veress 8-0. Freshman Alex Menichini earned a first round bye and then lost to No. 7 seed Ali Ansari of Stanford 8-4.
In doubles play, Fustar and Mullins blanked San Francisco's team of Markus Martinez and Geoff Gilpir 8-0 after a first round bye. Krohn and Menichini edged Nevada's tandem of Jay Stearley and Daniel Ericsson 8-6 in a first round match before dropping a 9-8 decision to Washington's Andrei Bizjak and Michael Rubin.
