FRESNO, Calif. - Junior Nick Fustar is the only Bulldog still alive in the main singles draw at the ITA Regional Championships in Berkeley. Fustar advanced to the quarterfinals when he defeated Washington senior Marius Lunde 6-2, 6-2.
"Nick once again played powerful, consistent tennis and has truly shown the ability to get to the net more in singles matchplay," said head coach Michael Hegarty. "It can be a great boost for us to see him playing this way as he can really help lead a team with his attitude."
Fustar will battle No. 13 seed Adrian Barnes of California today.
Senior David Mullins came close to pulling off a huge upset, but fell to No. 2 seed J.P. Fruterro of California 4-6, 7-6 (2), 6-4.
In doubles play, Mullins and Fustar defeated Fabio Jesus and Chris Smith of Sacramento State 8-4. They are scheduled to play the No. 4 seeded team of Ryan Haviland and Carter Morris from Stanford today.
Freshmen Alex Menichini and Alex Krohn have already been eliminated in both singles and doubles.
