FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State's David Mullins defeated Oregon's Oded Teig 7-6, 6-3 in the finals of the Wathen/Hancock Bulldog Classic at the Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center. Mullins is the third consecutive Bulldog to win the tournament and the fifth in the tournament's eight-year history.
Mullins, the No. 2-seed, did not lose a set on his way to the title. In his first match on Sunday, he brushed aside the sixth-seeded Ari Strasberg of Washington 6-2, 6-4. He won his sixth match in three days by getting past the unseeded Teig.
In doubles, the Sacramento State unseeded duo of Sherif Zaher and Joseph Gilbert took the title by beating unseeded Hiro Nakamura and Wayne Wong 8-5 in the finals. The consolation title will be played at a later day in Berkeley, Calif., with Andrey Vinogradsky and Nakamura squaring off.
The Bulldogs now face three weeks of practice before what is considered one of the most crucial tournaments of the Fall season, the ITA Region VIII Championships at Berkeley, Calif, on Oct. 28-31.
