FRESNO, Calif. - UTEP hands Fresno State their first Western Athletic Conference loss of the season. Late in the first half UTEP put two goals past Bulldog goalkeeper Mary-tyler Wahl (Riverside, Calif.). The Miners Jenny Andre scored the Miners first goal with thirty seconds remaining in the first half, and Erika lay score their second goal with two seconds reaming in the half. The Miners scored their final two goals in the second half. Today's victory was the Miners first WAC win of the season.
The Miners first goal came at 44:30 into the first half. Jenny Andre booted a high lofting shot from 40 yards out. The ball traveled over the out stretched arms of the leaping Bulldog goalkeeper Wahl into the back of the net. Erika Lay continued the scoring for UTEP at 44:58 when Kelly Parker hit her with a cross from the right side of the goal. Lay took the cross and dribbled around one defender and shot the ball from the right side of the goal into the left corner. In the second half Rebecca Calder drilled shot from 35 yards out over the head of Wahl at 61:30. Miranda Cuthbertson Scored the Miners final goal with ten minutes remaining in the game. One of Cuthbertson's teammates hit a shot that was deflected by a Fresno State defender bounced off the goal post straight to the foot of the charging Cuthbertson who placed it into the open goal.
The Bulldogs kept the pressure on the Miners goalkeeper Kathryn Gilmore throughout the game. Fresno State had 18 shots on goal and Gilmore saved six of those shots. Senior forward Jill Pearson (Garden Grove, Calif.) had two opportunities to score, but both of her shots sailed just wide of the goal. The UTEP defense held Pearson to only four shots. Pearson is averaging five shots a game this season.
The Bulldogs hit the road next week when the travel to Dallas to face WAC foes No.16 SMU and TCU. Friday Oct. 13 at 7 p.m. the Bulldogs meet the No. 14 SMU Mustangs at Westcott field. On Sunday Oct. 15 at noon Fresno State visits TCU at Garvey-Rosenthal Stadium.
