FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State head coach Bob Bennett is pleased to announce two more early signees for the 2000 recruiting season. The list includes an outstanding outfield transfer from Laney College and a spectacular pitcher from Merced High School.
Leading off the list of signees is Brendon Suga (Mililani, Hawaii/Laney College), a quick outfielder with a strong arm. Suga is currently playing centerfield for Laney College and leading off. He is a speedster on the base paths with the intellect of a true base stealer. He struggled last season with a nerve bruise to his right elbow, but he still managed to average .280 at the plate. At the regionals for Laney College Suga had 15 at bats while managing to get on base nine times where his speed makes him a very dangerous base runner. He played in the Northern California All-Star game this past summer. Coach Bennett expects Suga to make an immediate impact for the Bulldogs during the 2002 season.
Rounding off the signees is David Bair (Merced, Calif./Merced College), a strong lefthanded pitcher with spectacular pitch control. Last season for Merced he had a 3.60 ERA and two saves. He had 15 appearances over 30 innings. Last season he gave up 28 hits 12 earned runs and struck out 45 batters. Bair is a very competitive lefthanded pitcher with a huge breaking ball. He was the Central California Conference MVP in 1999. Coach Bennett expects Bair to make a definite impact on the Bulldog pitching staff during the 2002 season.
"I am excited about the contributions these players will make to our program," Bennett said. " We are fortunate to sign these two athletes during the early signing period, because of the talents they possess."
