San Jose State wins 2000 WAC Tournament Championship

FRESNO, Calif. - ,The No.4 seed San Jose State Spartans defeated the No. 2 seed Tulsa Golden Hurricanes 3-1 in the WAC Tournament Championship match this afternoon at Bulldog Stadium.
San Jose State got on the board early in the second quarter, when Kristina Jacob dribbled around one defender and curved a shot around the diving Tulsa goalkeeper Pam Devore into the back of the net. Twenty minutes later, the Spartans Karli Silveira headed a ball past the Tulsa goalkeeper to give the Spartans a 2-0 lead. The Spartans Jennifer Mescher sent a high arching ball to the head of Silveira who put it away for her third game-winning goal this season. Jolene Keel capped off the scoring for the Spartans one minute later. Mescher dribbled into the box with a wide open Keel to her left and Tulsa's goalkeeper in the middle. The Tulsa keeper charged out to block Mescher's shot, but she crossed the ball to a wide open Keel who tapped it in the wide open goal. With seven minutes remaining in regulation Tulsa scored their lone goal of the match. Julie Davidson scored the Golden Hurricanes goal when she belted a shot from thirty yards out that sailed over the head of the Spartans goalkeeper Eryn Meyer.
The Spartans will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament this evening when the selection committee reveals the pairings for the tournament. San Jose State ends their season with a record of 10-12-1, Tulsa ends their season with a record of 13-6-1. With their record this season Tulsa has a possibility of receiving an at large bid for the NCAA Tournament. The NCAA Women's College Cup semifinals and finals will be Dec. 1, & 3 at Spartan Stadium in San Jose, Calif.
