ATLANTA - Lindsay Logan scored 22 points, including a go-ahead 14-foot jumper with 19 seconds remaining, to propel Fresno State past Alabama State 72-69 in the first round of the Georgia Tech/Atlanta Northwest Marriott Holiday Classic. The win, FS's second in three games, improves the Bulldogs' mark to 4-7 while the Lady Hornets drop to 8-2.
The game was a see-saw affair throughout, with neither team holding a sizable advantage for the entire contest. The first half alone featured seven ties and four lead changes, with Fresno State holding a 38-36 edge at the intermission. Omelogo Udeze paced the Bulldogs in the opening stanza, scoring 12 points and adding seven rebounds.
FS bolted to a seven-point lead with 17:24 left in the second half, but ASU quickly got back into it, taking a 51-50 lead with 11:04 to go, beginning a back-and-forth trend which lasted the remainder of the game. The Lady Hornets built a 63-58 lead with 4:18 left when Tiffany Simon and Logan took over. Simon burried a jumper to cut the lead to three with 3:54 to go. One minute later, Logan hit a three-pointer to tie the contest 63-63. After an ASU basket, Logan once again hit a three, giving the Bulldogs a one-point lead with 2:17 to play.
The two teams traded baskets -- and the lead -- over the next three possessions. That set up Logan's heroics. With the score 69-68, Logan came off a screen near the top of the key, took a pass from Simon and nailed a jump shot, making the score 70-69, Fresno State. Alabama State missed on its next opportunity up the court, and Udeze canned two free throws to end the scoring. Nichole Miller's desperation half-court attempt at the buzzer glanced off the rim.
In addition to Logan, Fresno State received a huge day from Udeze, who scored a career-high 20 points and added 13 rebounds for her second career double-double. Also scoring in double figures for the Bulldogs were Tiffany Simon, with 11, and Laura Garcia, who had 10.
Miller led Alabama State with 22 points.
Fresno State plays in the championship game of the tournament Saturday at 2 p.m. EST against host Georgia Tech. The Yellow Jackets defeated St. Francis (Pa.) in Friday's opening game 94-51.
