Baseball Team To Hit Road For First Time

FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State makes its first road trip of the season when it travels to Sanat Clara (2-4) to play the Broncos in a three-game series that begins Friday at 2 p.m. The Bulldogs (3-2) are coming off a three-game sweep of Pepperdine last weekend at Pete Beiden Field. Saturday and Sunday's contests are slated for 1 p.m. starts at Buck Shaw Stadium.
Right-hander Tom Graham (Sr., Modesto, Calif.) is scheduled to start Friday's opener, his third start of the season. Graham brings a 1-1 record and a 4.15 ERA into the contest. In his last outing, he allowed only one run on four hits in six innings pitched against Pepperdine on Feb. 4. Graham will be opposed by Santa Clara freshman southpaw Matt Travis (0-0, 1.13 ERA). Travis earned a no-decision in his first start of 2000, allowing one run in six innings of work last Friday against Nevada.
Righty Shawn Hannah (Sr., Clovis, Calif.) is slated to get the nod in game two of the series, his third start of 2000. Hannah is 0-1 with a 6.52 ERA in a team-high 9.2 innings pitched. He shut out Pepperdine last Saturday for 5.2 innings before allowing a triple that plated two runs in thew sixth inning. Hannah earned a no-decision in the contest. Another freshman left-hander, Joe Diefenderfer, will oppose Hannah in Saturday's tilt. Diefenderfer is 1-0 with a perfect 0.00 ERA in nine innings of work this season. He picked up his first collegiate victory last Saturday, tossing seven scoreless innings against Nevada.
Beau Hintz (So., Stockton, Calif.) will try to carry the momentum from his first start of the season on Sunday, when he is scheduled oppose Bronco righty Camdon Kelley. Hintz tossed a complete game five-hitter in Sunday's finale against Pepperdine, allowing two runs (one earned) and striking out seven. It was the southpaw's first career complete game. Kelley brings an 0-2 record and 8.00 ERA into Sunday's game.
WAC Player of the Week, Brandon Gemoll (So., San Jose, Calif.), leads a Bulldog offense that is hitting .299 (49-for-164) as a team. Gemoll is coming off a weekend that saw him hit .667 (8-for-12) with four runs scored, a double, a home run and four RBIs. He leads the team in batting average (.500), runs scored (5), hits (10), home runs (1), total bases (14), on-base percentage (.545) and is tied for the team lead with a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage. Gemoll has struck out only once in his 22 plate appearances this season. In all, four Bulldog regulars are hitting better than .333 heading into this weekend's series.
