FRESNO, Calif. - Pitcher Ozzie Gonzalez (Sr., Salinas, Calif.) is scheduled to have surgery on both his feet next week and will be out for the remainder of the 2000 season. The surgery will be performed on the navicular bone in each foot.
"We are sorry he will be out for the rest of the season," Fresno State head coach Bob Bennett said. "It hurts us because we were counting on him to do some pitching for us this season. We just hope we can get him back for next season."
Gonzalez, who redshirted in 1998, will apply for a medical hardship so he can return to the Bulldogs next season.
Gonzalez, who had yet to pitch this season, appeared in 16 games (five starts) in 1999 before experiencing arm problems. He was 3-2 with a 6.03 ERA in his first season as a Bulldog. Gonzalez walked 16 hitters and struck out 19 in 31.1 innings pitched last season.
Fresno State (5-2) returns to action on Friday, Feb. 18, when it hosts Oregon State in a three-game series at Pete Beiden Field. First pitch is slated for 7 p.m.
