FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State completed the three-game sweep of Oregon State with an 8-0 victory at Pete Beiden Field Sunday afternoon. It was the third consecutive series sweep for the Bulldogs. Fresno State extended its winning streak to eight games and improved to 8-2 for the season. It is the longest winning streak by Fresno State since March 9-21, 1997, when the Bulldogs reeled off 10 consecutive victories. Oregon State saw its record fall to 1-5 for the season.
Beau Hintz (So., Stockton, Calif.) was outstanding in his second start of the season, tossing a 105-pitch, complete-game four-hitter with no walks and four strikeouts. Hintz retired the first 10 hitters he faced and did not allow a runner past second base. It was the first shutout by a Fresno State pitcher since Jeff Weaver blanked Grand Canyon in the WAC Tournament on May 13, 1998, a span of 77 games. He improved to 2-0 for the season.
"Beau's performance was really good today," Fresno State head coach Bob Bennett said. "He had good command of his pitches. He fell behind a couple of times but fought back each time. He kept the ball down and was really poised today. He has really improved since the end of last season."
The Bulldogs scored early and often, as they plated three runs in the first inning off Oregon State starter Mark Newell. Fresno State added a run in the fourth, two in the fifth and single tallies in the sixth and eight to round out the scoring.
Newell picked up the loss and dropped to 1-1 for the season. He allowed four runs (three earned) on six hits and walked two in 3.2 innings pitched. A trio of Beaver relievers allowed four runs on seven hits in 4.1 innings of work.
Eight of Fresno State's nine starters on offense had at least one hit on the afternoon and four of the Bulldogs' 13 hits went for doubles. Josh Labandeira (Jr., Porterville, Calif.) went 1-for-4 with a pair of runs scored and extended his hitting streak to eight games. Nick Garcia (Jr., Lakewood, Calif.) was 2-for-3 with three runs scored, a double and one RBI. Anthony Acevedo (Sr., Bakersfield, Calif.), Brad Harper (So., Madera, Calif.) and Joey Myers (Fr., Fresno, Calif.) each added a pair of safeties for the Bulldogs.
"It was great to win this series," Bennett said. "Oregon State is a good team. We played really well this weekend. We executed very well offensively and this was a great series for us."
Bennett now stands at 1,198 career victories after today's victory. He is two wins shy of becoming the 10th head coach in NCAA history and the second this season to win 1,200 career games. Texas Tech head coach Larry Hays won his 1,200th career game on Feb. 2 against West Texas State.
Fresno State returns to action on Tuesday, Feb. 22, when it hosts Cal Poly in the final game of its four-game homestand. It will be the Bulldogs first mid-week game of the season. Left-hander Mike Hernandez (Fr., Fresno, Calif.) is scheduled to make his first collegiate start for the Bulldogs. Hernandez will bring a 1-0 record into the contest. First pitch is slated for 7 p.m. at Pete Beiden Field.
