FRESNO, Calif. - A day after throwing Fresno State's first shutout in 77 games, Bulldog left-handed starting pitcher Beau Hintz (So., Stockton, Calif.) was named WAC Pitcher of the Week Monday.
Hintz threw his second consecutive complete game in Fresno State's 8-0 victory against Oregon State on Sunday. Hintz, who was making his first start since Feb. 6 and second start of the season, shut out the Beavers on four hits, walked none and struck out four in the 105-pitch gem. He retired the first 10 hitters he faced and did not allow a base runner past second base.
Hintz is 2-0 with a team-best 0.50 ERA and has 11 strikeouts in 18 innings pitched this season. Hintz, who was invited to the Team USA baseball tryouts last summer, has limited opposing hitters to a .138 (9-for-65) batting average this season.
Fresno State (8-2), which is off to its best start since 1995, has won eight consecutive games and swept its last three opponents -- Pepperdine, Santa Clara and Oregon State -- by a combined score of 69-21. It is Fresno State's longest winning streak since March 9-21, 1997, when the Bulldogs reeled off 10 consecutive victories.
The Bulldogs return to action tomorrow night when they host Cal Poly in the final game of its four-game homestand. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Pete Beiden Field.
