FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State shortstop Josh Labandeira (Jr., Porterville, Calif.) was named WAC Player of the Week Monday. It is the fourth consecutive week a Bulldog has been named either Player or Pitcher of the Week by the conference.
Labandeira continued his hot hitting last week, as the Bulldogs defeated Cal Poly 6-4 on Tuesday and won 2-of-3 games at then No. 21/22 Rice this past weekend in the 2000 WAC series opener (5-2, 9-5 & 0-8). He hit .353 (6-for-17) with a pair of doubles, his first home run of the season and four RBIs last week. Labandeira also registered 11 total bases and had a .647 slugging percentage. He entered the week on a career-best eight-game hitting streak and extended it to 12 games, as he registered hits in all four contests. It is the longest hitting streak by a Bulldog since Josh Hannah hit safely in a school-record 38 consecutive games from Feb. 26-May 25, 1997. Labandeira is second on the team in batting average (.352), runs scored (11) and doubles (5). He also has 11 RBIs, a .500 slugging percentage and has reached base at a .407 clip this season.
No. 20/23 (Collegiate Baseball/Baseball America) Fresno State (11-3) returns to action tomorrow night when it hosts California in the first game of a season-long 13-game homestand. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Pete Beiden Field.
