FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State first baseman Brandon Gemoll (So., San Jose, Calif.) was named WAC Player of the Week Monday morning.
Gemoll played a big role in the Bulldogs' three-game sweep of Pepperdine at Pete Beiden Field this past weekend (14-2, 7-6 and 6-2). The Bulldogs improved to 3-2 with the victories.
Gemoll hit a robust .667 (8-for-12) with four runs scored, a double, his first home run of the season and four RBIs in the three-game set. His slugging percentage was 1.000, as he had 12 total bases in the series. Gemoll also reached base at .692 clip. He was flawless in the field, handling 25 chances (24 putouts and one assist) without an error.
In Friday's 14-2 victory, Gemoll was 4-for-5 with a pair of runs scored and two RBIs. The four hits were a career high. Although he went 0-for-3 in Saturday's 7-6 come-from-behind victory, Gemoll did drive in a run with a first-inning walk. He continued to wield a hot bat in Sunday's 6-2 win, tying his career mark for hits a game (four) set on Friday night. Gemoll was a perfect 4-for-4 with two runs scored and a towering eighth-inning home run to right field.
Gemoll leads the Bulldogs with a .500 (10-for-20) batting average. He also leads the squad in hits (10), multi-hit games (3), runs scored (5), total bases (14), slugging percentage (.700), on-base percentage (.545) and is tied for the team lead with a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage. Gemoll has struck out only once in his 22 plate appearances.
Fresno State returns to action on Feb. 11, when they travel to Santa Clara for a three-game series against the Broncos. It is the first road trip of the season for the Bulldogs. First pitch Friday at Buck Shaw Stadium is slated for 2 p.m.
