FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State relief pitcher Hans Smith (Sr., Central Point, Ore.) was named WAC Pitcher of the Week Monday. It is the fifth time a Bulldog has been named either player or pitcher of the week this season.
Smith continued to dominate out of the bullpen, as he helped lead the Bulldogs (5-1 last week) to their 11th Pepsi/Johnny Quik Classic championship. Smith was the winning pitcher in Fresno State's 5-1 victory against Creighton in the title game and also earned two saves earlier in the week (vs. Temple, Bowling Green). He was outstanding in the championship game, as his first 17 pitches were strikes and 22 of his 23 pitches found the strike zone. He allowed only one hit and struck five in his three innings of work in the tournament finale. Smith, who was named to the All-Tournament Team, pitched five scoreless innings in the classic, allowing only three hits (.176 opponent batting average) while walking none and striking out eight.
Smith leads the Bulldog pitching staff in games (12), wins (5), saves (4) and ERA (1.42) this season. He has struck out 24 hitters and walked only one in his 25.1 innings of work in 2000. Smith has allowed only one run in his last 10 appearances, a span of 23 innings pitched.
No. 16/17/18 (USA Today Baseball Weekly/Baseball America/Collegiate Baseball) Fresno State returns to action Friday night when it hosts Hawai'i in a three-game WAC series. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Pete Beiden Field.
