Fresno, Calif. - On a day when head men's coach Red Estes was honored in the final home dual meet of his career, both the men and women captured victories despite solid competition from the opposition.
The men compiled 233 points beating out Cal State Fullerton (196), Sacramento State (109) and Northwest Nazarene (91). The women scored 235 points, topping Sacramento State (187), Cal State Fullerton (150) and Northwest Nazarene (74).
The Bulldog men won nine of the events and secured second place in 11 events. Senior Nick Paramo had a superb day in the pole vault. Paramo first cleared a personal-best height of 17-2 3/4 and then, on his third attempt, he cleared a height of 17-6 1/2 in dramatic fashion.
In the throwing events, junior Mike Guidry tossed the discus 155-3 to take first, just ahead of junior Ryan Beckenhauer (150-0). Beckenhauer took first in the shot put, launching it a personal-best 53-9 1/4. Senior Shylo Eaton captured first in the hammer competition with a mark of 173-3.
Sophomore Tierre Sams ran the 100 meters in 10.63 seconds to take first, while sophomore Gabe Orosco won the 800 meters with a time of 1:52.39. Two freshman also had stellar performances in the distance events. Josh Roddy passed Aaron Matthias of Northwest Nazarene in the final 50 meters of the race to win the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:02.03, a Bulldog best this season. Robert Vaca ran a personal best 15:02.96 in the 5,000 meters to take first, with sophomore Philip Ogilvie in second at 15:06.45. The Bulldog 4 x 100 relay team won the event with a time of 40.94.
Junior April Wiechmann had a solid all-around day for the women's team. Wiechmann took first in the high jump and the hammer throw and scored 38 total points for the team. Freshman Crystal Simmons took first in the long jump (18-2 1/2) and first in the triple jump (38-8 1/4). Junior Misty McNaughton captured first in the discus (140-9) and sophomore Kayla Russum won the javelin (147-10). Sophomore Brooke Lankard cleared a season-best 12-4 in the pole vault to win that event.
Freshman Sandi Russler took first in the 1,500 meters (4:57.15) and third in the 800 meter run (2:20.35). Junior Brianna Denley took first in the 800 meters, recording a personal best 2:18.08 and secured fourth in the 1,500 meters (5:00.18).
Junior Jynette Grayson-Reed won the 400 meter dash with a season-best time of 56.02. Junior Tamisha Allen took second in the 100 meter high hurdles with a season-best time of 14.57.
Both teams will be back in action next weekend at Ratcliffe Stadium in the 72nd annual Bob Mathias Fresno Relays.
