FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State women's soccer team scored two second half goals and defeated the Mexican National Team 2-0 on Saturday night in front of 2,912 fans at Bulldog Stadium. It was the first match in school history against international competition.
Midfielder Nicole Burnside (Jr., Stockton, Calif.) scored the Bulldogs' first goal at the 41:26 mark in the second frame when she drilled an outside shot past goal keeper Linnea Sandland. Forward Morgan Oliveira (So., Lemoore, Calif.) added a goal at the 44:02 mark to complete the scoring.
"I think this was a wonderful experience for our players," Fresno State head coach Peter Reynaud said. "I felt the team played well and was organized throughout the game. I am very excited about the outcome and our overall play was excellent. The team did a lot of things we worked on in practice in preparing for this match and our defense did a good job of winning balls."
The offense recorded 14 shots on goal in the match, eight of which occurred in the second half. Forward Jill Pearson (Jr., Garden Grove, Calif.) paced the Bulldogs with four shots and midfielder Aimee Thompson (So., Simi Valley, Calif.) added three shots.
The Bulldog defense limited Mexico to 14 shots and goal keeper Mary-tyler Wahl (Fr., Riverside, Calif.) recorded the shutout. Wahl had two saves on the night.
Reynaud said he was pleased with the inaugural event.
"I hope we can make this a yearly event," he said. "It is a great fund raiser for the program."
Fresno State will open the 2000 regular season on August 25 when it hosts Pepperdine.
