FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State left-fielder Anthony Acevedo (Sr., Bakersfield, Calif.) and starting pitcher Shawn Hannah (Sr., Clovis, Calif.) were named WAC Player and Co-Pitcher of the Week, respectively, on Monday. The Bulldogs now have earned the conference's weekly awards nine times this season.
Acevedo had a week to remember for the Bulldogs (3-1 last week). He hit .563 (9-for-16) with seven runs scored, two doubles, a pair of home runs and 10 RBIs last week. Acevedo posted an amazing 1.063 slugging percentage (17 total bases) and reached base at a .571 clip. The 1999 honorable mention All-American also was flawless in the field, handling five chances without an error. His first home run of the week -- a ninth-inning grand slam -- gave Fresno State a dramatic 7-4 victory at Hawai'i on April 17. Acevedo drove in four runs twice last week, a season high, and registered three multi-hit contests. His four hits in the Bulldogs' 15-3 win at Hawai'i-Hilo on April 20 tied his career high. The 1999 All-WAC selection is hitting .313 (57-for-182) with a team-best seven round-trippers, 47 RBIs and 15 multi-RBI tilts this season. He is tied for the team lead with 16 doubles and is second on the squad in runs scored (39), total bases (94) and slugging percentage (.516).
Hannah continued his strong month of April, as he tossed a five-hit shutout against Hawai'i-Hilo on April 21. He walked only one and struck eight in the Bulldogs' 8-0 victory. The 6-foot-3 right-hander retired the first 10 hitters he faced and allowed only one runner past second base. It was his first career shutout and his second complete game during the road trip to Hawaii. Hannah, who is 7-2 this season, is tied for the team lead in wins and quality starts (7). He also leads the pitching staff with 81.1 innings and three complete games and is second with a 2.88 ERA (leads the starting rotation). Hannah has struck 59 hitters and is limiting opponents to a .227 batting average.
No. 16 Fresno State returns to action Tuesday night when it begins its final homestand of the season. The Bulldogs host San Francisco at 7 p.m.
