Bulldog Golf Regains No. 5 Ranking in the Nation

FRESNO, Calif. - No. 5 Fresno State moved up two spots this week (from No. 7) in the Golfstat national golf poll after a third place showing at the Ben Hogan Cougar Classic this past weekend bumping Houston to the No. 6 spot and Arizona State into the No. 7 spot in the nation. The Bulldogs earned a team score of 277-291-291--859, combining for a 72.50 scoring average on the season. Georgia Tech continues to hold the No. 1 spot followed by No. 2 Clemson, No. 3 Oklahoma State, and No. 4 Georgia.
The Bulldogs held the No. 5 ranking earlier this season marking the highest national ranking Fresno State golf has enjoyed since the 1987 team which boasted current PGA standouts Kevin and David Sutherland.
The Bulldogs regain the No. 5 ranking as they prepare for the WAC Championships in Lewisville, Texas at the Golf Club at Castle Hills, beginning on Monday, May 1. Fresno State is the only WAC team in the top 25 in the nation. No. 30 TCU joins the Bulldogs as the only WAC teams ranking in the top 50.
Individually ranked from the WAC, Martin Maritz, of Tulsa, leads with a No. 15 individual ranking followed by three Bulldog golfers, No. 29 Ryan King, No. 41 Todd Rose and No. 69 Danny Paniccia. King and Rose continue to break the Fresno State all-time school record in lowest average-per-round with their 71.57 and 71.77 season averages respectively. The school record, set by Tim Norris in 1980, stands at 71.89.
