Acevedo, Creighton Earn Academic Honors

FRESNO, Calif. - Outfielder Anthony Acevedo (Sr., Bakersfield, Calif.) and second baseman Tom Creighton (So., Weldon, Calif.) were named to the GTE/CoSIDA Academic All-America District VIII baseball team on Friday. They were the only two players from the WAC to be selected to the squad.
Acevedo currently maintains a 3.54 grade-point average in kinesiology. He is on track to graduate later this month and is a finalist for the inaugural John McLendon Memorial Minority Postgraduate Scholarship. The 1999 honorable mention All-American is a two-time Fresno State Scholar-Athlete and was a WAC Scholar-Athlete a year ago. Acevedo is hitting .317 with a team-high nine home runs and 54 RBIs this season. The 1999 All-WAC selection is tied for the team lead with 18 doubles and has 42 during his two-year career. He currently stands in a seventh-place tie with Craig da Luz (1995-98) on the all-time list.
Creighton currently has a 3.76 GPA in agricultural business. He has registered a perfect 4.0 GPA in two of his three semesters at Fresno State and is a two-time Fresno State Scholar-Athlete. The 1999 WAC Co-Freshman of the Year is hitting .307 with 47 runs scored, nine doubles, a home run and 22 RBIs this season. Creighton has reached base by either hit, walk or hit by pitch in 48 of the 52 games he has played in the year.
The district selections will be placed on a national ballot and the 2000 GTE CoSIDA Academic All-America baseball team will be announced on June 6.
