FRESNO, Calif. -
Although it wasn't easy, No. 17-32 seed USC got past No. 33-48 Pacific 4-1 in the first round of the NCAA tournament, held at the Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center in Fresno, Calif. With the win, USC (17-8) moves on to the second round to face host Fresno State on Sunday at 1 p.m.
The Trojans got off to a strong start, winning at Nos. 1 and 3 doubles to take a 1-0 lead. USC kept the momentum going with quick, straight set victories at Nos. 4 and 5 singles, increasing its lead to 3-0. But Pacific hung tough, cutting the lead to 3-1 with a victory by Niklas Larsson at No. 6 singles.
Meanwhile, both Nos. 1 and 2 singles split sets, setting the stage for 79th-ranked Ryan Moore at No. 3 singles. The sophomore fought off two break points and needed three match points, but he finally managed to hold serve at 5-4 in the second set to clinch the match for Troy. At the time the match was clinched, Dietrich Haug of Pacific and No. 30 Patrick Gottesleben of USC were tied 3-3 in the third while the Tigers' Thomas Guilloteau was ahead of the Trojans' No. T92 Andrew Park 4-1 in the third set.
The Trojans will look to exact revenge on the Bulldogs in tomorrow's second round match. It was Fresno State who knocked USC out of last year's NCAA tournament by handing it a 4-1 victory in the second round in a match also held at the Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center. The winner will advance to the round of 16 at the University of Georgia to play the winner of the Florida-UAB match.
