Men's Tennis Falls to USC in NCAA Second Round

USC rebounded from dropping the doubles point to win four singles matches in straight sets to defeat No. 13 Fresno State 4-1 in the second round of the NCAA tournament at the Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center in Fresno, Calif. The win advances the Trojans to the round of 16 in Athens, Ga., where they will play fourth-seeded Florida.
With a loud, pro-Bulldogs crowd in attendance, Fresno State jumped out to an early 1-0 lead by winning two of the three doubles matches. Peter Luczak and David Mullins won the deciding match by defeating Patrick Gottesleben and Daniel Langre 8-4.
But USC bounced back fast, winning the first set at Nos. 1, 3, 5 and 6 singles. The first Trojans victory came at No. 5 singles, where Nicholas Rainey took out Rob Cheyne 6-3, 6-3 to tie the score at 1-1. Not long after, the 30th-ranked Gottesleben knocked off No. 32 Peter Luczak 6-4, 6-3 to make it 2-1 USC.
Perhaps the biggest victory Troy would receive all day came at No. 6 singles, where Parker Collins, who entered the contest with a 5-19 dual match record at No. 6, beat FS's Nick Fustar 6-2, 6-3, giving USC a 3-1 lead. Meanwhile, there was a race on to decide who would clinch the match for the Trojans. At No. 3 singles, Ryan Moore was ahead of Andy Scorteanu 7-6 (1), 5-0 and at No. 4 singles, No. 58 Daniel Langre was up on David Mullins 4-6, 6-4, 5-2.
In the end, it was Moore who sealed the win for USC by closing out Scorteanu 7-6 (1), 6-0. By winning, Troy avenged last year's loss to Fresno State in the second round of the NCAA tournament, a match also played in Fresno, Calif.
