FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State left fielder Anthony Acevedo (Sr., Bakersfield, Calif.) was named WAC Player of the Week on Monday. It is the 10th time a Bulldog has been named either Player or Pitcher of the Week this season.
Acevedo had one of the best weeks of his two-year career for the Bulldogs, 4-0 last week. He hit .533 (8-for-15) with six runs scored, a pair of doubles, two home runs and seven RBIs. He posted a 1.000 slugging percentage (15 total bases) and reached base at a .650 clip. The 6-foot-5 southpaw also was flawless in the field, handling 10 chances without an error.
In Tuesday's 15-2 victory against Sacramento State, Acevedo went 4-for-5 with three runs scored. The four hits tied his career high and it was the third time he had accomplished the feat this season. He followed that performance with one of his greatest games as a Bulldog. In Thursday's 9-6 victory against TCU, the 1999 All-WAC selection went 3-for-4 with two runs scored, a double, a career-high two home runs and a career-best six RBIs. His two doubles last week pushed his career total to 42 and he moved into a seventh-place tie with Craig da Luz (1995-98) on Fresno State's all-time list.
The 1999 honorable mention All-America selection is hitting .318 and leads the team with 46 runs scored, nine home runs, 54 RBIs and 16 multi-RBI contests this year. He also is tied for the team lead with 18 doubles and three stolen bases.
Fresno State returns to action on Tuesday afternoon when it travels to Berkeley to play California. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Evans Stadium.
