Jackson Earns WAC Athlete of the Week Honors
Senior sprinter E.J. Jackson (Modesto, Calif.) was awarded the WAC Athlete of the Week honor on May 3 because of his great performance at the Cal/Nevada Championships last week In the 100 meters, the event Jackson won last season, he beat Kevin Howard of Cal State Fullerton with a time of 10.65 for first place. Jackson also won the 200 meters with a time of 21.43 and was a part of the victorious 4 x 100 relay team which finished the race with a time of 40.26.
WAC Championships In Two Weeks
At the Cal/Nevada Championships, the Bulldogs got a great taste of intense competition that is likely to be seen at the WAC Championships, May 19-20 in El Paso, Texas. Texas Christian, Southern Methodist and UTEP all rank in the top 20 of the Trackwire poll and will present many challenges for the Bulldogs. Jackson and Nakayama rank in the top 10 of the WAC in their respective sprinting events. Sophomores Gabe Orosco (Tipton, Calif.) and Philip Ogilvie (Clarksburg, Calif.), Padilla and Roddy also rank in the top 10 of the distance events. The five Bulldog pole vaulters lead the conference with their stellar marks and senior Scott Wenholz (Gilroy, Calif.) has the top score of any decathlete.
Cal/Nevada Recap
The Bulldogs displayed fine performances at the annual Cal/Nevada Championships to capture the title last week as they topped Cal 87-85. Along with Jackson's solid performances, the Bulldogs got outstanding marks from many others. Freshman Kyle Carano (Fresno, Calif.) took second in the triple jump with a season-best mark 49-3 3/4. Junior C.J. Nakayama (Clovis, Calif.) finished fifth in the 400 meters (48.09) and fourth in the long jump (23-6 1/4). Senior Tim Padilla (Coarsegold, Calif.) ran a season best 9:17.97 in the 3,000 meter steeplechase resulting in a fifth place finish. Also, sophomore Tierre Sams (Fresno, Calif.) finished third in the 100 meters and freshman Darnell Hammock (Oakland, Calif.) took fourth in the 200 meters with a season-best time of 21.89. Junior Chris Uribe (Granite Bay, Calif.) took seventh in the javelin throw with a mark of 198-3.
Cal/Nevada Decathlon Recap
Junior Donnell Wickett (Ventura, Calif.) placed second in the Cal/Nevada decathlon competition with a score of 6,215 points, but finished first among collegiate athletes. Champion Geoff Bradshaw was unattached with a score of 6,825. Wickett finished first in the 100 meters, and 1,500 meters and second in the 400 meters. Sophomore Justin Schwartz (Lodi, Calif.) finished third with an overall score of 6,045. Schwartz tied for first in the pole vault, clearing a height of 13-11 1/4.
