FRESNO, Calif. - Relief pitcher Hans Smith (Sr., Central Point, Ore.) was named a second-team All-American by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association on Wednesday.
Smith is coming off a senior season that saw him lead the Bulldogs in appearances (33), saves (9), wins (8) and ERA (2.56). The first-team All-WAC selection struck out 59 hitters and walked only 12 in 70.1 innings pitched. His nine saves were the third-best single-season total in school history and he finished his career with a school-record 17 saves. The 6-foot-9 left-hander was chosen by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in the 11th round during Monday's Major League Baseball draft.
"I am excited for Hans," Fresno State head coach Bob Bennett said. "I am proud for him and the program. He had a special year with the eight wins and nine saves. It was an All-American type of year and it couldn't have happened to a better person."
This marks the fifth consecutive season Fresno State has had a player selected to an All-America team. The Bulldogs have had 31 All-Americans in school history, 30 of which have come during Bennett's 32-year tenure.
