After a drop-off in attendance from previous years, the Bulldogs climbed back among the nation's top-10 in average attendance for the 2002 season. Fresno State women's soccer finished last season with the 9th highest average attendance at 1,089 through seven home dates.
The Bulldogs also finished 18th overall last season in total home attendance, as 7,624 fans passed through the turnstiles.
In fact, the Bulldogs have finished in the top four nationally in three of the past eight seasons, including a school-best, third-place finish in 1998.
In 1996, Fresno State averaged 1,514 fans per match in only its second year as a varsity sport, which ranked fourth nationally. The Bulldogs drew more than 1,300 fans to each of their seven home matches and at least 1,500 to five matches during the season.
The Bulldogs finished fourth in the nation for a second consecutive season in 1997 after averaging 1,329 fans per match. A then-record crowd of 2,160 witnessed Fresno State's 3-2 victory against San Diego State, Oct 24. Two days later, the school record was topped again when 2,368 fans watched the Bulldogs shut out Hawai'i by a score of 1-0.
The 'Dogs averaged a school-best 1,637 fans per match a year later, which was the third-best total in the country. A school-record 5,100 fans witnessed the Bulldogs' 2-1 victory against Cal State Bakersfield in the season opener, Sept. 1. The total shattered the school single-game record set only nine months earlier, Oct. 26, 1997, against Hawai'i.
Fresno State averaged 1,181 fans per match during the 1999 season, good for 12th nationally. The 'Dogs had more than 1,000 fans attend seven of their nine home matches, including a season-high 1,509, Sept. 30, a 2-1 victory against No. 7 USC.
