Tim Skipper's 2000 Game-By-Game Breakdown
8/17/2000 12:00:00 AM | Football
Sept. 2 at No. 16 Ohio State
Skipper played a large role in the Bulldogs stopping Ohio State's six attempts to reach the goal line from inside the 2-yard line. On one of those plays, however, he suffered a stinger to his left shoulder and was forced to sit the remainder of the contest. Skipper ended the game without a tackle.
Despite playing at about 75 percent due to his lingering shoulder injury, Skipper returned to form, making eight tackles in nearly helping lead the Bulldogs to an upset victory over UCLA. Due mostly to Skipper's effort, the FS defense helped thwart Bruins running back DeShawn Foster for most of the contest.
Back at 100 percent for the first time since prior to the Ohio State game, a national television audience got a chance to see what those in Fresno and around the WAC already know -- Tim Skipper is something special. The senior middle linebacker was all over the field, racking up 11 tackles in helping lead an FS defense which allowed a mere three points to California. Skipper was in Cal quarterback Kyle Boller's face the entire evening, including one bonecrushing hit after which Boller stayed on the Bulldog Stadium turf for several seconds. Skipper also had two tackles for loss in the contest.
Once again, Skipper shined before a national television audience. This time, his performance included 12 tackles (10 solo), one tackle for loss and a fumble recovery. Facing Rice's spread option gave the senior an opportunity to display his speed. Skipper many times moved from one side of the field to the other, outrunning the Owls' quarterback to bring him down before he could rack up a big gain. Skipper was also instrumental in guiding the defense to stopping Rice's high powered running attack late in the game, giving Fresno State's offense a chance to pull off comeback victory.
It was an easy night for Skipper, who did not play the majority of the second half after the Bulldogs took a 27-0 first quarter lead before heading into the locker room at intermission on top 44-7. Despite playing only half the game, Skipper still led the team with eight tackles. Perhaps most importantly, he and the rest of the defense got a chance to rest up for the WAC showdown on Saturday at UTEP.
After a rough start to the game, Skipper led the Fresno State defense to clamp down on the UTEP high-powered offense. After the Miners scored touchdowns on their first two possessions, FS allowed only one touchdown the remainder of the game and helped give the Bulldogs offense a chance to get back into it. Skipper was his usual oustanding self, racking up nine tackles, one tackle for loss and one pass breakup. Through six games, Skipper is second on the team with 49 tackles despite having missed nearly all of the Ohio State game.
While offense took control of the game early, the defense made that lead stand up. Skipper posted eight tackles, most of which came in the first half, and constantly was in the way of whatever TU attempted to do offensively. The senior finished with eight tackles, the sixth consecutive game he has had at least eight. Skipper's tackle total also keeps him in second place on the team and ninth in the WAC.
After giving up touchdowns on the first two possessions, Tim Skipper, the lead of the Bulldogs defense, took over. Fresno State put the clamps on Hawai'i's high-powered offense, allowing the Bulldogs to score 45 unanswered points en route to a 45-14 lead late in the fourth quarter. By the time UH scored two meaningless touchdowns to make it 45-27, Skipper was already out of the game getting ready for the Nov. 11 showdown at TCU. The senior defensive captain finished the Hawai'i game with six tackles and one pass breakup.
The defense had many stellar individual efforts in the 24-7 loss, and one of the very best was by Skipper. The senior had 12 tackles in the game and helped contain the Horned Frogs offense. It was his third 12-tackle performance of the season, a feat he duplicated against California and Rice. He has 75 tackles this year, second on the team.
In his final home game, Skipper performed incredibly, leading the Bulldogs with 11 tackles in helping dominate the SMU offense. With the Fresno State offense ravaged by injuries, it became apparent this game was going to have to be won by the defense. With Skipper as principal signal caller, the Bulldogs allowed the Mustangs only seven points in a 14-7 victory, which made Fresno State bowl eligible for the second consecutive year.
In perhaps the biggest game of the season, Skipper had a tackle for loss and a key interception -- the first of his career -- to lead Fresno State to a 37-6 defeat of San Jose State. The win put the Bulldogs in a bowl game for the second consecutive season. Skipper was a huge key in stopping SJSU's Deonce Whitaker, the nation's third leading rusher. Whitaker had only 56 yards rushing, his fewest amount on the season. Led by Skipper, the Bulldogs defense held SJSU's high-powered offense to nearly 200 yards below its season average.
