FRESNO, Calif. - Peter Luczak and Kim Niggemeyer have been awarded preseason singles rankings in the Wingspanbank.com rankings released Tuesday. The national rankings are determined by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) National Ranking Committee and given to the top 100 men's and women's players.
Luczak, who finished last season ranked No. 32 among singles players in the nation, is currently ranked No. 14. The Bulldog senior lost in the first round of the NCAA singles tournament last season to eventual finalist Carlos Drada of Kentucky 3-6,6-3,6-4. Luczak paced Fresno State with a 32-14 singles record, the second consecutive year he has accumulated 32 victories. He has won 82 career singles matches entering this season, only 23 shy of the all-time mark of 105, held by Bryan Juinio.
Luczak and the Bulldogs will kick off their tournament portion of the season Thursday, Sept. 21 at the National Clay Court Championships in Baltimore, Md.
Niggemeyer is currently ranked No. 17 among the women, nine spots higher than the No. 26 ranking she held at the conclusion of last season. Niggemeyer, a junior from Berlin, Germany, became just the second Bulldog in the program's history to earn All-America honors last season. She finished with a 30-10 overall record and was named WAC Tennis Player of the Year. Niggemeyer reached the second round of the NCAA singles championships last season, only to fall 6-2, 6-0 to Bea Bielik of Wake Forest.
Niggemeyer will also be participating in the main draw of the National Clay Court Championships in Baltimore, Md., on Sept. 21.
