FRESNO - The Fresno State Bulldogs broke out of their two match losing streak to defeat the Fairfield Stags 3-0.
Fairfield goalkeeper Dana Coommuniello deflected a shot from junior midfielder Aimee Thompson (Simi Valley) right to the foot of the charging senior forward Jill Pearson who put it away for the Bulldogs first goal of the game at the 19-minute mark. Fresno State kept the pressure on the Stags, but were unable to score again in the first half. Early in the second half sophomore forward Virginia Jenkins set-up freshman forward Jackie Jewell with a nice lead pass that Jewell placed over the Fairfiled goalkeeper in the top right corner of the net for the `Dogs second goal of the night at 72:59. Eight Minutes later Pearson served a corner kick to freshman forward Erin Sayegusa (Honolulu, Hawaii) who shot the ball between a couple of Fairfield defenders to score the Bulldogs final goal of the game. Fairfield goalkeeper Dana Communiello had 10 saves on 23 Fresno State shots allowing 3 goals. Communiello was pressured all night by the charging bulldog offense, but was unable to stop them. On the other end of the field Fresno State sophomore goalkeeper Mary-tyler Wahl had 4 saves on 7 Fairfield shots. In the first half Fairfield applied pressure to Wahl, but she stopped everything the Stags could shoot at her. The Fresno State Bulldogs improve their record to 4-3 while the Fairfield Stags fall to 0-5-2 on the season.
Fresno State returns to action Sunday Sept. 17 at 11 a.m. to face the 0-6 Weber State Wildcats at Bulldog Stadium.
