Fresno State To Open Season at Charles Fluitt Classic
9/29/2000 12:00:00 AM | Men's Tennis
The prestigious tournament features six teams including the Bulldogs, all of which qualified for the 2000 NCAA Championships: Baylor, Fresno State, Harvard, Notre Dame, Tennessee and Kentucky.
Bulldog netters Peter Luczak and David Mullins both went 4-1 in last year's tournament, ultimately earning them national recognition in the singles rankings. The No. 14 ranked Luczak will be taking a sabbatical during the fall semester and will rejoin the team in the spring. The senior has won 82 career singles matches entering this season and is only 23 shy of the all-time mark of 105, held by Bryan Juinio (1992-1996). The Bulldogs will send five players to compete in the tournament: senior Sean Cooper, junior Nick Fustar, Mullins and freshmen Alex Krohn and Alex Menichini. Freshman Michael Moretti, currently in Venezuela, will begin school in the spring semester.
Fresno State will square off against No. 7 Baylor and Harvard on Friday, Kentucky and No. 3 Tennessee on Saturday and Notre Dame on Sunday.
Play will be a dual match of eight singles and four doubles matches. Awards will be given to the winner of each flight. A percentage of wins will be used to determine the champion of each flight.
Fresno State will host the Wathen Hancock Bulldog Tennis Classic Friday, Oct. 6-8, at the Spalding Wathen Tennis Center.
