DALLAS - SMU went on an 11-0 run early in the first half and controlled Fresno State for the remainder of the game, handing the Bulldogs a 66-55 defeat at Moody Coliseum. The loss drops FS's record to 5-10 (1-2 WAC) while the Mustangs even their mark at 7-7 (2-1 WAC).
The score was tied 6-6 with 16 minutes 31 seconds remaining in the first half when SMU seized the momentum and ran away from the Bulldogs. D-dra Rucker was largely responsible for the 11-0 run, scoring seven points to give the Mustangs a 17-6 lead with 13:00 to go. Fresno State could never bounce back, eventually trailing at halftime 34-26.
Things didn't get any brighter for the Bulldogs in the second half. Behind solid outside shooting from Rucker and Anika Calvert, SMU took a 21-point advantage, its largest lead of the game, 10 minutes into the second half. Fresno State was never able to reduce the deficit into single digits the rest of the game.
FS's outlook was not made any better when Laura Garcia went down with a knee injury four minutes into the second stanza. She missed the remainder of the contest with what has been diagnosed as a possible strained posterior cruciate ligament in her left knee. She is questionable for Sunday's game at TCU.
Fresno State struggled mightily with its shooting the entire night, hitting only 34 percent from the floor. No one had a tougher time than sophomore guard Lindsay Logan, who had perhaps her most frustrating game of the year. While she did reach double figures for the 15th time in 15 games, Logan was only 3-of-17 from the field and 1-of-12 from beyond the arc. As a team, Fresno State was 2-of-20 from three-point territory.
One bright spot for the Bulldogs was Omelogo Udeze, who racked up 11 points and 13 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the year and second in a row. Tiffany Simon led FS with 16 points.
SMU was led by Rucker, who had 21 points. Calvert added 13.
The Bulldogs will try to rebound Sunday against TCU. Game time is 2 p.m. CST in Fort Worth, Texas.
