FORT WORTH, Texas - It's a custom at TCU for cheerleaders to throw t-shirts into the stands every time a Horned Frog makes a three-pointer. The way TCU shot from three-point territory in the first half on Sunday, the cheerleaders may have needed to ice down their arms at halftime due to excess use.
The Horned Frogs hit eight three-pointers in the first half and 11 in the game on their way to a 68-55 victory over the Bulldogs in front of 1,304 at Daniel-Meyer Coliseum. The loss drops injury riddled FS to 5-11 (1-3 WAC) while TCU, the WAC's first place team, improves to 12-4 (4-0 WAC).
The Frogs, who never trailed, took control of the game by the 10-minute mark of the first half, jumping to a 22-9 lead. Five different TCU players hit from beyond the arc in the opening stanza, with Amy Porter, Jill Sutton and Ebony Shaw all making two. The Horned Frogs' marksmanship gave them a 38-21 lead at the intermission.
The Bulldogs' chance to get back into the game may have come at the beginning of the second half, when TCU went ice cold and scored only five points in the first seven minutes. However, FS was only able to trim the advantage to 43-28, and the Frogs cruised the remainder of the way, holding at least a 13-point edge the rest of the way.
Fresno State was forced to play the game with only seven players due to injuries. Guard/forward Chantea Fleming did not accompany the team on the road trip due to shin splints in her left leg. She has missed the last seven games. Guard Laura Garcia also missed the game because of a twisted knee suffered in Friday's loss to SMU. Matters got worse in practice on Saturday, at which guard Laura Paukert sprained her ankle. A gutty Paukert still managed to play 27 minutes in the contest.
With only seven players available, Fresno State found scoring a quite a chore. The Bulldogs had only 21 first half points, tying a season low, while their 55 total points was tied for the second lowest output this year.
The game also saw two unfortunate trends continue for FS. The Bulldogs have never won a road game in the state of Texas, falling to 0-17 all-time. Fresno State is also 0-10 this season when scoring less than 65 points.
Fresno State was led by Tiffany Simon, who had 16 points and six rebounds. Lindsay Logan tallied 15 points, the 16th time in 16 games she has reached double figures. She is within earshot of the all-time record of 23, set by Yvette Roberts in the 1986-87 season.
The Bulldogs are off until Saturday when they play Nevada at 2 p.m. at the North Gym. All general admission tickets for the game are $1 as Fresno State will attempt to break the North Gym attendance record. Contests, prizes and halftime entertainment are all a part of the fun.
