FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State Interim Athletics Director Scott Johnson announced today several changes in the football program's future home schedules.
The most immediate change is the addition of Oregon, currently the nation's sixth-ranked team, to the 2002 schedule. Oregon replaces Texas Tech, which elected to buy out of its 2002 contract. The Red Raiders were scheduled to play in Fresno on Sept. 14, 2002. That game has been rescheduled for Sept. 9, 2005, the home opener of that season.
Fresno State and Oregon will maintain a previous negotiated three-game series from 2005-07, with the 2006 game played at Bulldog Stadium. One additional game with Oregon has been added to the 2009 Fresno State home schedule.
In other scheduling news, Johnson announced the completion of a home-and-home series with the University of Kansas, beginning in 2005 when the Jayhawks of the Big 12 Conference come to Bulldog Stadium. Fresno State will travel to Lawrence, Kan., in 2007.
The scheduling changes mean Fresno State will play 10 BCS conference opponents in the next five seasons, with five of those games coming at Bulldog Stadium.
"I believe this is the most exciting football schedule over a five-year period in the history of the school," Johnson said. "We've made some difficult negotiations and made a few schedule changes. But overall, this is an excellent schedule. I think the success of our program over the past couple of years under Pat Hill has allowed us to continue this type of aggressive scheduling. I think it's a great sign of the status of the Fresno State program. To have these quality programs coming to Bulldog Stadium is an important step for college football in the San Joaquin Valley."
This announcement completes the Fresno State football schedule through the 2006 season, with the exception of one home game opponent, to be announced for the 2003 season.
"We have always scheduled as tough a schedule as we can," head coach Pat Hill said. "And that's going to continue in future years. The future schedule brings some excellent programs to Bulldog Stadium, and I believe we will continue to be able to match up against some of the nation's top programs."
