EL PASO, Texas - Fresno State snapped it's two game losing streak defeating UTEP 1-0. Junior goalkeeper Mary-tyler Wahl (Riverside, Calif.) and the Bulldog defense recorded their second shutout of the season.
FS committed its most fouls of the season with 26 while UTEP finished with 19 in a tough match that was played in soggy field conditions.
The Bulldogs scored in the second half at the 54:46 mark off a free kick. Senior midfielder Aimee Thompson (Simi Valley, Calif.) shot a ball from the top of the box that bounced off several defenders and found the back of the net.
The Miners started a late rally in the last 20 minutes. What appeared to be a goal late in the match was nullified due to a foul. Later UTEP threatened to tie the match once more but midfielder Holly Cohen's shot hit the post ending UTEP's run.
"We dominated the match for 70 minutes and forced UTEP to play our game," said Coach Welp, "UTEP is always a difficult place to play in but we held off their late rally to secure the win."
With the win Fresno State improves to 5-6 on the season with a 2-1 WAC mark. UTEP falls to 3-7-2 on the year with a 1-2-1 record in WAC play. Up next, the Bulldogs will conclude their home schedule with matches against Boise State on Thursday and Nevada on Sunday.
