FRESNO, Calif. - Fifth-seeded Bulldog Stephan Suta won the ninth annual Wathen/Hancock Bulldog Classic singles title, and with Nick Fustar went on to win the doubles title. Fresno State hosted the tournament this weekend at the Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center.
Suta defeated Dietrich Haug of Pacific 6-4, 6-1 in the semifinals, then continued on to beat California's Wayne Wong 5-7, 6-2, 6-3. Fustar fell to Wong in the semifinals 6-4, 6-3. In the doubles final round, Fustar/Suta defeated Santa Clara's Mike Bruggemann/Victor Camargo to take the Doubles Title.
"It was a great weekend for Fresno State tennis, certainly for Stephan," head coach Brad Dancer said. "As the doubles champion, he showed a lot of heart, a lot of fight." Francisco Zepponi of Santa Clara beat Cal's Patrick Briaud to take the Consolation Title 9-7. While Lam/Ruso, also of Santa Clara, took the Doubles Consolation Title by beating teammates Braley/Zepponi 8-6.
