DALLAS (AP) - David Carr overcame a slow start to throw for 292 yards and four touchdowns as Fresno State beat SMU 38-13 on Saturday.
Carr was intercepted twice by the Mustangs (2-6, 2-4) in the first quarter and SMU had an early 10-0 lead.
But Fresno State (8-2, 4-2) got untracked late in the first half as Vernon Fox intercepted SMU's David Page inside the SMU 20. Carr found Marque Davis open in the end zone for a 3-yard touchdown pass with 6:49 left in the first half.
Carr then hit wide receiver Rodney Wright with a 65-yard touchdown strike, with Wright streaking down the sideline to give Fresno State a 14-10 lead with 3:56 left in the half.
Wright's reception broke the school record for career catches. He caught three more for the day to bring his total to 192.
SMU cut the Bulldogs' lead to 14-13 with Jacob Crowley's 38-yard field goal with 33 seconds left in the first half.
Fresno State outscored SMU 24-3 in the second half.
Carr rolled right and found Bernard Berrian open on the other side of the field for a 38-yard touchdown pass with 6:54 left in the third quarter.
Carr threw a 22-yard touchdown pass to Wright with 12:54 left to make it 31-13. Josh Levi's 2-yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter closed out the scoring.
Carr's first interception came on Fresno State's first possession, with cornerback Kevin Garrett returning it for a touchdown. The Bulldogs had a chance to tie it after defensive end Nick Burley recovered a fumble at the SMU 19, but Jarrian James' picked off Carr's pass two plays later.
Crowley kicked a 41-yard field goal to give SMU the 10-0 lead with 1:32 left in the first quarter.
