Burley Named WAC Football Defensive Player of the Week

DENVER - San Jose State quarterback Marcus Arroyo, Fresno State defensive end Nick Burley and Boise State kick returner David Mikell were named the offensive, defensive and special teams players of the week, respectively.
Arroyo, a junior from Meadow Vista, Calif. (Colfax HS), set an NCAA record with a single-game passing efficiency rating of 298.00. Arroyo completed 21-of-26 passes for a career-high 476 yards and five touchdowns with no interceptions in San Jose State's 64-45 win over Nevada. He also rushed for seven yards, caught a pass and made a key block on a 35-yard reverse. The Spartans put up a WAC record 849 yards of offense in the game.
Burley, a junior from East Palo Alto, Calif. (St. Francis HS), had five tackles, two tackles for losses, one sack, two quarterback hurries, forced a fumble and recovered a fumble in Fresno State's 38-13 win at SMU. Burley was the key to a defense that allowed just 200 total yards and no offensive touchdowns.
Mikell, a sophomore from Sacramento, Calif. (Natomas HS), returned five kickoffs for 184 yards including one for a 98-yard touchdown in Boise State's 28-21 win at Hawai'i. Mikell also rushed for 28 yards and a touchdown to record 212 all-purpose yards in the game.
Other offensive nominees included junior running back Brock Forsey, Boise State, senior receiver Rodney Wright, Fresno State, sophomore quarterback Luke McCown, Louisiana Tech, junior wide receiver Nate Burleson, Nevada, and sophomore quarterback Kyle Herm, Rice. On the defensive side, nominees included freshman cornerback Gabe Franklin, Boise State. Special team nominations included junior defensive back Sean Butts, Hawai'i, freshman placekicker Damon Fine, Nevada, and senior placekicker Derek Crabtree, Rice.
