Quarterback Kevin Sweeney helped Fresno State's cause throwing for three touchdowns and the Bulldog running game churned out 225 yards, not to mention the Bulldog defense recovering five fumbles and intercepting three passes. The Falcons, stunned by the Bulldog strength, stood by watching their undefeated season and 14-game winning streak, the longest in the nation, come to an end.
The Bulldogs ended the first quarter with only seven of their to-be 51 points off a touchdown from James Williams on a 10-yard run down the center. Barry Belli nailed the extra point
The Bulldogs 14-point second period boosted a 21-0 lead over the then-nationally ranked Falcons with an Anthony Mosley 1-yard run resulting from a Bulldog fumble recovery on the Bowling Green 12-yard line. Then, with 6:59 left in the half Bulldog Sweeney connected a 33-yard strike to Gene Taylor in the endzone. Belli secured both extra points.
The second half was simply more of the first with the Bulldogs scoring 23 points before time dissolved. Five minutes into the third quarter, Sweeney found Taylor alone on the sideline who scored on a 53-yard touchdown pass. Then, after an official timeout due to crowd noise, the Bulldogs marched 73 yards up the field scoring from a Kelly Skipper 29-yard run. Once again Belli completed the extra point pushing the score to 37-0 entering in the final period of play.
Sweeney connected a 40-yard pass with double-teamed Stephan Baker standing in the endzone. Then with 5:57 left in the game and the Bulldogs setting up on the 13-yard line, Skipper ran the ball through a wide gap down the center to seal the Fresno State California Bowl V victory. The 51-7 scoring margin ranks in Bulldog records as the highest bowl game spread and scoring game in Fresno State history.
