No. 18 Men's Tennis Blanks Cal Poly

FRESNO, Calif. -- The No. 18 ranked Fresno State men's tennis team opened their spring season in fine fashion Sunday afternoon with a 7-0 shutout of Cal Poly. The Bulldogs (1-0) won all six singles matches and all three doubles matches in their home opener against the Mustangs (2-2). The Bulldogs have not lost to Cal Poly since 1988, and have won the last seven matches.

Fresno State received superb singles play from all six men in the lineup, four playing in their first dual-match as a Bulldog. All-American senior Peter Luczak stormed past Brandon Fallon 6-1, 6-3 at the No. 1 spot to give Fresno State the early edge. With the win, Luczak needs only 23 wins to eclipse the all-time singles mark of 105 held by Bryan Juinio. Senior transfer Sean Cooper, who posted a 36-10 singles record last season at the University of San Diego, easily defeated Brian Kent at the No. 2 slot. Junior Nick Fustar, playing at No. 3 singles, scored a convincing win against John Cappello 6-4, 6-2. Freshmen Alex Menichini, Alex Krohn and Michael Moretti all were successful in their Bulldog debuts, winning their matches in straight sets. Menichini played particulary well against freshman Nick Carless at the No. 4 spot, fighting off a late charge by Carless to earn the 7-5, 6-4 victory. Senior David Mullins was a late scratch from the lineup due to a minor back injury, but is expected to be back on the court for the Bulldog's upcoming match.

Fresno State claimed the doubles point as well, winning al l three matches. The No. 1 doubles team of Krohn and Luczak defeated Carless and Fallon 8-4. No. 2 doubles Cooper and Moretti and No. 3 doubles Fustar and Menichini won their matches 8-6 and 8-2, respectively.

The Bulldogs return to action Thursday when they begin a three-match road trip. Fresno State plays at No. 22 Cal on Thursday, at No. 1 Stanford on Friday and at Santa Clara on Saturday.
