FRESNO, Calif. - Jynette Grayson-Reed, a senior child development major at Fresno State, is a sprinter on the Bulldog track and field team. The three things that occupy most of her time are church, track and school and she could not be happier with that. She thoroughly enjoys doing all three things. She loves school so much that she plans on getting her masters after she graduates this semester and possibly going on to get her doctorate. The doctorate depends on how well her childcare center is doing at the time. She would also like to start a childcare center while getting her masters.
Some people might think of this as a hassle, or that there could be better ways of spending their time. Not Jynette, she looks at it as a learning experience and a chance to apply what she has learned at Fresno State into real life situations. You can learn a lot more from real life situations than you can from what they teach you in the classroom. In her free time she is a nanny for Ryan, a two-year old, and his sisters Amanda, three and Melissa five.
"The children have taught me as much as I have taught them," Grayson-Reed said. "I always have to be aware of what I am doing and how I am doing it because I know they are watching. Young children love to imitate what the adults are doing and that is not always a good thing. They catch me sometimes and I realize I said something I or did something that I shouldn't have done, but I learn from these situations and make the correction to what I have said or done so that they know that it is not right for them to do it."
Grayson-Reed says that her mother played a big role in making her the person she is today. "Mom allowed us to ask questions and she listened to our problems never trying to dog the tough question," reflected Grayson-Reed. "She would always give her children an honest answer rather than them going out into the world miss informed about life." Her mother has prepared her daughter for the world that awaits her after graduation. Jynette is excited to pass along what she has learned at Fresno State and from her mother, to the future generations of the world.
