Track and Field Set to Begin 2001 Outdoor Season

FRESNO, Calif. - 2001 WAC OUTDOOR SEASON SET TO BEGIN
The track and field team opens the 2001 Western Athletic Conference outdoor season this Saturday, March 17, at the Cal Poly Invitational. The all day competition will be held in San Luis Obispo, Calif. Following the first meet of the season, the Bulldogs will then travel to Sacramento, Calif., for a tri-meet versus host Cal State Sacramento and Cal State Fullerton on Saturday, March 24. To finish out the month, the `Dogs will host their first home meet of the season on Saturday, March 31. Fresno State will host three other teams in Air Force, Brigham Young University and Nevada for the quad-meet. Two home competitions open the month of April. The 73rd Annual Bob Mathias Fresno Relays will begin on Tuesday, April 3, and finish on Saturday, April 7, with all events taking place at Warmerdam Field in Fresno, Calif. The following weekend, the `Dogs play host to the Easter Decathlon/Heptathlon on Tuesday, April 10, and Wednesday, April 11. The squad will finish out the month on the road. On Friday, April 20, through Saturday, April 21, the Bulldogs split for two competitions in Walnut and Davis, Calif., for the Mt. SAC Relays and the Woody Wilson Relays. Opening the month of May, the team will host a tri-meet with Cal Poly and Cal State Northridge on Saturday, May 5. The following weekend the team heads to Modesto for the Modesto Relays on Saturday, May 12, for their final regular season outdoor meet. To complete the month, the 2001 WAC Outdoor Championships come to Fresno, Calif., Wednesday, May 16, through Saturday, May 19. The four-day championship will begin with the multi-level events on Wednesday and Thursday and will finish on Friday and Saturday with individual competition.
RECAPPING THE 2000 SEASON
The 2000 season saw the women finish with an overall record of 6-2. The team had three first place finishes, one second place finish, one eight place finish and an additional 14th place finish at the College Series Championships. The team opened their campaign with two consecutive first place crowns in two quad-meets on March 18 and 25th. The first win came against San Francisco State, CS Bakersfield and Portland State and the second against Sacramento State, Nevada and CS Fullerton. The `Dogs inked their third first place finish at the Fresno Relays. Finally, the squad ranked eight at the Cal/Nevada Championships.
Last season the men finished with an overall record of 7-1. The team had four first place finishes, one second place finish, one third place capture and an additional 14th place finish at the College Series Championships. A first place slot in a quad-meet versus San Francisco State, Cal State Bakersfield and Portland State opened the 2000 campaign on March 18. The team inked another first place rank the following weekend against Sacramento State, Northwest Nazarene and CS Fullerton. The final two first place crowns came at the 72nd Fresno Relays and the Cal/Nevada Championships.
2001 WAC CHAMPIONSHIPS COME TO WARMERDAM FIELD
The 2001 WAC Outdoor Championship pits FS against Rice, Southern Methodist University, Texas Christian University, the University of Texas-El Paso, Tulsa and Hawai'i. The last time the `Dogs hosted the championship was in 1994. That year, the women finished second with 157 points, bowing to BYU's 254 points. The men won the title with 183 points, just seven more than their closest opponent, Brigham Young. The championship involved eight teams including: Fresno State, BYU, UTEP, Wyoming, Colorado State, San Diego State, New Mexico and Utah.
