Baseball Blows Navy Out of the Water 10-2

FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State opened the 23rd Annual Pepsi/Johnny Quik Classic with a 10-2 victory over Navy before 3,091 fans at Pete Beiden Field. Josh Labandeira (Sr., Porterville, Calif.) played an outstanding game for the Bulldogs going 4-for-5 with his fifth home run of the season in the bottom of the fourth. Junior Zach Minor (Walnut Creek, Calif.) pitched a solid seven innings for Fresno State striking out seven Midshipmen while allowing only one unearned run to improve his record to 5-1 this season. Matt Foster tallied the loss for the Navy pitching staff dropping his record to 0-1.
Fresno State scored two runs in the first and two in the second to get out to an early 4-0 lead over the Midshipmen. In the first, Tom Creighton (Jr., Weldon, Calif.) and Oscar Lopez (Sr., San Diego) led off the inning with singles to put runners on first and third for Labandeira. He hit a single to score Creighton from third and advance Lopez to third. The following batter Brad Harper (Jr., Madera, Calif.) hit into to a double play that scored Lopez from third giving the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead at the end of one. In the second, Labandeira singled into left field to score Tobey Riday-White (Jr. Berkeley, Calif.) from third. The Bulldogs added one more run in the bottom of the second, when with the bases loaded Casey McGehee (Fr., Aptos, Calif.) was hit by a pitch to score Lopez giving Fresno State a 4-0 lead at the end of two.
Navy tried to battle back in the top of the third when Willie Gury hit a fielder's choice that scored David Woolsey cutting into the Bulldogs 4-1 lead.
The Bulldogs added a run of their own in the bottom of the third when Dan Young (Sr., Orange, Calif.) grounded out to the short stop to score Dave Hafiz (So., Woodbury, Minn.) from third giving Fresno State a 5-1 lead over the Midshipmen.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Bulldogs added their final five runs of the game. The lead off batter Lopez walked and the following batter Labandeira hit his fifth home run this season for a 7-1 Bulldog lead. Fresno State added two on a fielding error by the Navy shortstop off the bat of Riday-White to score Brandon Gemoll (Jr., San Jose, Calif.) and Hafiz. The Dogs' final run of the game came on a single by Creighton to score Young giving Fresno State a 10-1 win over the Midshipmen.
The Bulldogs improve their record to 16-8 while Navy falls to 2-6 on the season. Fresno State will be back in action Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. for their second game of the Pepsi/Johnny Quik Classic against New Mexico at Pete Beiden Field.
