Baseball Loses a Heartbreaker to Notre Dame 5-4 in Ten Innings

FRESNO, Calif. - Even in Fresno the "Luck of the Irish" prevails thanks to a single by Paul O'Toole in the bottom of the tenth with one out to score Steve Sollmann giving the Fighting Irish a 5-4 victory in ten innings, before 3,820 at Pete Beiden Field.
For the Irish, Brandon Viloria got the win improving his record to 1-1, while Beau Hintz gets the loss for the Bulldogs dropping his record to 2-3 on the season.
Fresno State got out to an early lead over the Irish when they scored two runs in the top of the third. Tom Creighton led off with a walk and Oscar Lopez followed with a home run to give the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead.
In the bottom of the sixth, Notre Dame scored four runs to take the lead from Fresno State. With one out and the basses loaded designated hitter Brian Stavisky hit a grand slam to give the Irish a 4-2 lead.
The Bulldogs tied it up in the top of the eighth when Brad Harper hit a home run to score Brandon Gemoll who doubled previously, tying the game at 4-4.
In the Bottom of the tenth No. 9 Notre Dame, with runners on first and third hit Paul O'Toole, who got the hit the Irish needed to score the winning run, giving the Notre Dame a 5-4 victory over the Bulldogs.
Fresno State will be back in action Thursday night against Bucknell at 7 p.m. in the friendly confines of Pete Beiden Field for day four of the 23rd Annual Pepsi Johnny Quik Classic.
