Bulldogs outslug Lopes in back-and-forth 10-8 win
4/2/2026 11:22:00 PM | Baseball
The Bulldogs pounded out 15 hits and held off multiple GCU rallies, improving to 9-17-1 on the season.
How It Happened
Grand Canyon struck first with a leadoff home run, but Fresno State responded immediately with a huge bottom of the first. Owen Faust led off with a hit, Brady Hewitt doubled him home, and Griffen Sotomayor followed with an RBI single. Two batters later, Michael Boyd launched a three-run homer to right to cap a five-run inning and give Fresno State a 5-1 lead.
The Bulldogs added another run in the second on a wild pitch, but GCU chipped away, scoring in each of the first four innings to cut the lead to 6-5. A solo home run in the fourth brought the Lopes within one.
Fresno State answered in the fifth. Sky Collins singled and later scored on Jett Ruby's RBI single, and Marcus Nolen followed with an RBI knock to push the lead to 8-5.
Grand Canyon kept swinging, tying the game at 8-8 in the seventh after a pair of sacrifice flies and a fielder's choice.
The Bulldogs delivered the decisive blow in the bottom half. Nolen doubled to put two in scoring position, and Ethan Payne came through with a clutch two-run double to restore a 10-8 lead.
From there, the Fresno State bullpen shut the door. William Page-Allen tossed two scoreless innings to earn the win, and Wyatt Thornbury closed it out with a clean ninth, stranding the tying run at the plate.
