Portland Pilots Fly-by Bulldogs Baseball 9-3

FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State dropped its second game of the 23rd Annual Pepsi Johnny Quik Classic to Portland, before 3, 184 at Pete Beiden Field. Portland got out to an early lead over the Bulldogs and they were unable to come back from the deficit. For Fresno State Nick Moran was credited with the loss evening his record at 2-2, while Eric Bull Pitched a complete game for Portland striking out 10 Bulldogs improving his record to 2-1.
Portland scored three runs in the top of the first to put Fresno State in a hole. Matt Allen led off with a triple for the Pilots and three batters later Steve Chamberlain singled to center field to score Allen. The following batter Kory Casto hit his first home run of the evening to score Chamberlain and give Portland a 3-0 lead. The Pilots added one more in the fourth to when Casto hit his second home run of the evening to give Portland a 4-0 lead.
Fresno State cut the Portland lead to two runs in the bottom of the fourth. Brandon Gemoll led off the inning with a double and was followed up by Brad Harper who doubled to score Gemoll. The next batter Casey McGehee singled to score Harper making the score 4-2. The Pilots scored two runs in the sixth when Brock Griffin doubled to score two runs giving Portland a 6-2 lead over the Bulldogs.
In the eighth for Fresno State, Casey McGehee doubled to score Gemoll cutting the lead to three runs, but in the top of the ninth Portland put the Bulldogs away for good. The Pilots scored three more insurance runs in the top of the ninth to put Fresno State away. Portland will face No. 9 Notre Dame Saturday at 7 p.m. to battle it out for the 2001 Pepsi Johnny Quik Championship. Fresno State will face Illinois at 4 p.m. for the fourth place game in the friendly confines of Pete Beiden Field.
