Track and Field Opens 2001 Outdoor Season

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - The Fresno State track and field team completed its first outdoor meet of the 2001 season today, Saturday, March 17, in San Luis Obispo, Calif. The Cal Poly Invitational was a non-scoring competition that showcased eight teams, Cal Poly, UC Irvine, Nevada, Sacramento State, Utah State, Brigham Young University, Montana State and Fresno State.
The women had three top three finishes on the day, two coming from the javelin throw. Junior Kayla Russum (Lake Stevens, Calif.) tossed a second place mark of 141-11. Freshman teammate Krissy Schelir (Fresno, Calif.) nabbed the third place finish after throwing 138-07. In addition, junior hurdler Rachel Bauer (Clovis, Calif.) crossed in 1:04.74 in the 400-meter low hurdles, for a third place finish.
The men had a successful day in the relay events, taking second in the 400-meter sprint relay and third in the 1,600-meter relay. Also performing well were sophomores Josh Roddy (Manteca, Calif.) and Kevin Carano (Fresno, Calif.). Relay team A finished the 400m relay in 41.82 for their second place finish, while the 1,600m relay Team A crossed in 3:18.25 for third. Roddy finished just behind his personal-best time of 3:53.12 in the 1,500 meters, but earned second place with a time of 3:53.29. Carano managed a fourth place finish in the long jump with a distance of 21-11 1/2.
The Bulldogs next competition comes this Saturday, March 24, as they head to Sacramento, Calif. The meet will be the first tri-meet of the season, as the team will face host Sacramento State and Cal State Fullerton.
