Track and Field Captures Two First Place Team Finishes

FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State track and field team captured two first place team finishes at its' second outdoor meet of the season. Both the men's and women's squads inked the top spot for the second week in a row. The men walked away with 224 points, while the women garnered 229 at Warmerdam Field on Saturday, March 31, verus Air Force, Cal State Bakersfield and Sacramento State.
The women's team inked 10 first places, nine of them individual and one earned in the 4 x 400-meter relay. In the sprints, the Bulldogs placed first in every event. Sophomore Tiffany Simon crossed at 12.27 in the 100-meter dash. In the 200 and 400 meters, senior Jynette Grayson-Reed claimed the crown. She ran a personal-best time of 24.25 in the 200, while crossing in 54.46 in the 400. For the middle distance events, the women gathered second, third and fourth places. Senior Brianna Denley earned fourth in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:19.50. Kara June, a freshman distance runner earned two personal-bests, with a second place effort in the 1,500-meter and a third place rank in the 5,000-meter at 18:43.20. The women swept the hurdles, notching first and second places in both events. Senior Tamisha Allen and sophomore Crystal Simmons took the top two spots in the 100-meter hurdles. Allen clocked a 14.43, while Simmons kicked out a 14.70. Simmons also captured first place in the triple jump with a mark of 40-04 1/4. The 400-meter hurdles saw senior Brandi Jenkins ink a personal-best time of 1:03.74 en route to her first place crown. Once again, the throws were dominated by the 'Dogs. Freshman Krissy Schelir took first in the shot put with at toss of 44-11 and second in the discus at 145-06. In the hammer, junior Jamie Farley threw a personal-best mark of 170-06, ranking her sixth in Fresno State's career leader's list. Junior Kayla Russum continued her reign in the javelin with a mark of 141-06. Finally, the women's 4 x 400-meter relay rounded out the first place captures with a season-best 3:16.20.
On the men's side, they also inked 10 first place crowns, eight of them individual and two relays. The highlight of the day was senior Ryan Beckenhauer's first place effort and personal-best throw in the shot put at 59-03 1/2. The mark is also a NCAA provisional qualifier. Beckenhauer also set a personal record in the discus with a second place throw of 162-01. Also, earning a first place rank in the throwing events was freshman Shlomi Ben-Shushan. He tossed the hammer a distance of 189-07, while setting a personal-record as well. In the sprints, the men clinched first in all of the events. Sophomore Darnell Hammock clocked a 10.74 in the 100, freshman Chad Seiler sealed first in the 200 at 21.66 and sophomore Aaron Vasquez crossed in 48.32 in the 400. For the middle distance events, the men also notched two first place finishes. Sophomores Gabe Orosco and Josh Roddy earned their crowns, with Orosco finishing in 1:53.30 in the 800 and Roddy at 3:51.56 in the 1,500. Sophomore triple jumpers Kevin and Kyle Carano captured first and second in the event. Kevin leaped to a mark of 50-10 1/4, while brother Kyle jumped 49-03. Finally, the men swept both relay events, crossing the 4 x 100 finish line at 40.48 and the 4 x 400 at 3:14.10. Both times were season-bests.
The Bulldogs look ahead to the 73rd Annual Bob Mathias Fresno Relays slated for April 7, 2001, at Warmerdam Field.
