HONOLULU - Fresno State scored six runs in the fifth to put Hawai'i away. Josh Labandeira hit his team leading 10th home run of the season to help lead the Bulldogs past the Rainbows.
The Bulldogs got out to a four run lead in the top of the first. Dan Young led off the game with a walk and was followed with a double by Oscar Lopez down the right field line that scored Young. Two batters later Brandon Gemoll doubled down the left field line to score Lopez and two batters later Brad Harper doubled down the left field line to score Gemoll and Lopez to give the Bulldogs a 4-0 lead.
Hawai'i responded with two runs in the bottom of the first to trim the Fresno State lead to two runs. The Rainbows scored their runs on a two run home run by Pat Scalabrini to trim the Bulldog lead to 4-2.
Josh Labandeira hit a two run home run in the top of the second, his tenth of the season, over the left field wall to give the Bulldogs a 6-2 lead. In the top of the fifth, the Bulldogs had another big inning, scoring six runs to take a 12-2 lead. With runners on second and third Nick Garcia singled to score Casey McGehee who led off the inning with a single and advanced Ben Fritz to third. The following batter Joey Myers singled to left score Fritz, and two batters later with the bases loaded Lopez hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Garcia. Labandeira stepped to the plate and hit his team leading third triple of the season to score Myers and Young. Gemoll then singled to score Labandeira and put an end to the Bulldogs six run inning.
In the bottom of the sixth, Hawai'i added their third and final run of the game when Zach Minor walked in the run. The walk could be credited to the off and on down pours that seemed to roll through every time the Bulldogs were in the field. Considering the weather conditions Minor pitched a solid game striking out four batters and allowing only six hits in his second complete game of the season.
The Bulldogs added their final run of the when lead off batter Oscar Lopez was hit by a pitch and then the Rainbows pitcher balked twice to advance Lopez to third. Two batters later Gemoll hit into a 4-3 to score Lopez giving the Bulldogs a 13-3 victory over the Rainbows.
Fresno State improves their record to 25-16 overall and 9-9 in the WAC, and are headed to Hilo Wednesday for a three-game series with the Vulcans. We apologize for the tardiness of this posting, but our posting site has been down for the last few hours.
